چکیده

Socio-hydrology has expanded and been effective in exposing the hydrological community to ideas approaches from other scientific disciplines, social sciences particular. Yet it still much explore regarding how capture human agency combine different methods disciplinary views both develop knowledge. A useful starting ground is noting that complexity of human–water relations due interactions not only across spatial temporal scales but also organizational levels systems. This calls for consideration another analytical scale, interdisciplinarity study methods. Based on papers published this journal’s Special Issue Advancing over 2019–2022, paper illuminates understanding coupled systems can be strengthened by capturing multi-level nature decision making applying an interdisciplinary multi-method approach.

Debates—Perspectives on socio-hydrology: Capturing feedbacks between physical and social processes

In flood risk assessment, there remains a lack of analytical frameworks capturing the dynamics emerging from two-way feedbacks between physical and social processes, such as adaptation and levee effect. The former, ‘‘adaptation effect’’, relates to the observation that the occurrence of more frequent flooding is often associated with decreasing vulnerability. The latter, ‘‘levee effect’’, relat...

Socio-hydrology: conceptualising human-flood interactions

Over history, humankind has tended to settle near streams because of the role of rivers as transportation corridors and the fertility of riparian areas. However, human settlements in floodplains have been threatened by the risk of flooding. Possible responses have been to resettle away and/or modify the river system by building flood control structures. This has led to a complex web of interact...

A journey of a thousand miles begins with one small step – human agency, hydrological processes and time in socio-hydrology

When simulating social action in modeling efforts, as in socio-hydrology, an issue of obvious importance is how to ensure that social action by human agents is wellrepresented in the analysis and the model. Generally, human decision-making is either modeled on a yearly basis or lumped together as collective social structures. Both responses are problematic, as human decision-making is more comp...
